House of a Million Dreams

So it is Friday morning, May 4th. I have been so bad about blogging because I needed to see some major progress before I felt I could write more.

Last week we finished demo on the house and it was eye opening! Everything is out- down to the bare bones and the potential was really unveiled. In a house that previously had 2nd floor ceilings under 8ft we are pushing up to 9ft be reinforcing the roof structure and moving the collar ties… (I know… the terminology was foreign to me before this too!) We are vaulting the master bedroom ceilings and also capturing the view of the backyard with big windows.

On the first day of demo I went in to see piles of debris filling the basement but when I saw something with color I got curious… to most people this find would be nothing but to me it was a historical design treasure… A real poster advertising the “Hamid- Morton Big 3 Ring Circus,” at the Chicago Coliseum. In great condition although a little dusty and begging to stay with this house in such a way by presenting itself flat on top of all the demolition waste like the brightest, most colorful star in the sky. This circus’s history dates back to 1932- Reminding me once again of the song from the Greatest Showman, A Million Dreams- My theme for the project. This awesome poster will go back into this house after the house is done going through it’s major surgeries to be whole again.

Surgeries that include orthopedics… (framers), Cardio and Neuro- Plumbing & Electric and then finally the Plastics come into play… with the all the new details acting like a sort of fountain of youth.

Stay tuned… posts coming more frequently now as the dream unfolds…

Wishing I could leave the brick exposed but it would make for a chilly winter in this dining room.

So not exactly what you would consider a "finished basement" yet. I took this picture right before I discovered treasure...

Treasure found among rubble. It's official- This is the house of "A Million Dreams." So cool! This picture will find it's way into the final deign of the house for whomever lives in it to have a piece of it's history.
